Christchurch Innovations: Justice Services Recovery

When the Ministry of Justice lost access to its properties in the Canterbury earthquakes it quickly re-established court services in Christchurch with a “do whatever it takes” attitude and an innovative approach.

To an extent, the earthquakes provided an opportunity to accelerate and test manager’s plans. In Christchurch, operating District Court and High Court services from shared courtrooms has given us the opportunity to evaluate the difficulties and benefits of multi-purpose court facilities.
